5 Simple Daily Steps for a Healthier YOU

by | May 2, 2014 | Sleep, Wellness

The following is a basic outline of 5 simple steps recommended by Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen. This list is derived from their ‘Best Selling’ book: YOU STAYING YOUNG – The Owner’s Manual for Extending Your Warranty.

1. Walk 30 Minutes

No excuses here. Regardless of how busy you may be, 30 minutes of walking per day (every day) should not be an insurmountable obstacle to a healthy lifestyle. If you have to break it up into two 15 minute walks, or even three 10 minute walks throughout the day, that is A-Okay. Just make sure you walk a minimum total of 30!

2. Clean Your Teeth (flossing and brushing)

Maintaining good oral hygiene is an easy and essential daily step to maintaining your overall health. Oral disease has been linked to: cardiovascular disease, bacterial pneumonia, low or high birth weight, diabetes complications and osteoporosis. As well, it is linked to sexual dysfunction. So clean those teeth every day!

3. Drink Green Tea

Green tea is a “super food” antioxidant. It is linked to: heart health, brain health, blood sugar stabilization, cell support and growth, and stress relief.

4. Sleep for 7 to 8 Hours a Night

The best way to accomplish this is to adopt a pre sleep ritual to put you in a restful state of mind. This can be accomplished in a number of ways. Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen recommend the following:

  • 15 minutes before bed, finish must-do tasks and tie up the day’s loose ends (they recommend making a list of tomorrow’s tasks to free them from your mind and avoid stress-related sleep problems)
  • complete all before-bed hygiene tasks
  • spend a few minutes doing breathing and meditation (see #5 below)
  • avoid stimulatory acts such as watching TV or strenuous exercise.

The good news: although stimulatory, sex before bed is recommended!

5. Meditate for 5 Minutes

The true goal should be to start with a minimum of 5 minutes, at some point, during every day and work your way up to 15 minutes or more. Meditation means different things to different people. At its core, it involves moments of personal silence to recharge, refocus and become rejuvenated.
