4 Tips To Achieve Your Fitness Goals

As we start the new year, there are goals and resolutions that we all hope to achieve.

Did you start off the new year by telling yourself that this is the year you‘ll finally lose those extra pounds, eat healthier and take more time out for yourself? These are all great things to incorporate into our lives and you want to make sure you have the right strategies in place to ensure you set yourself up for SUCCESS.

Whether it’s your first time at the gym, an avid exerciser looking for a more aggressive goal, or returning to working out, we want to help make this the year you stay committed to your health and fitness.

We’ve enlisted the advice from Health Centre Manager and Personal Trainer, Devon Hayashida at our Oakville Club to help you reach all your goals in 2018.

Follow these 4 simple tips that will help you feel more confident in your fitness journey and help you to achieve success.

1 Schedule your workouts

Scheduling workouts in your calendar, as you would a work or doctor’s appointment, is highly important. Every week, if nothing else, you should first know when your workout days are, so that you can plan other things around these times. This also keeps you mentally aware and prepped.

Schedule 3-4 workouts at the gym per week. This builds a habit and gets helps you to establish a routine. You need the 3-4 times a week frequency in order for your body to have more chance of seeing and feeling change, which will be a massive motivator. Now these don’t need to be grueling 90-minute workouts, we recommend 40-60 minutes.

It’s about efficiency and this consistency will help the body feel great and energized regardless of time or hitting your full results.

TIP: Don’t show up to the gym and go 100% to the point where you can’t move the next day! You should always feel like you’ve exercised, but can still manage well after. To avoid burning out or missing days because you’re too sore, follow these general guidelines to what your workouts should look like based on 4 workouts/ week.

• Two of your workouts should be challenging, but manageable (60-70% feeling of exertion)

• One workout should be slightly more difficult to feel more accomplished and have a higher output (70-80% feeling of exertion)

• One should be something different that you simply enjoy.

Remember to alternate your workouts, as the things we enjoy most often are not always the best path to the results that you would be most proud of.

2 Plan long term

Don’t allow yourself to have a Plan ‘B’ or go in with the mentality of ‘at least I tried’. This is wiring your brain to accept failure. We have seen countless people with zero knowledge or plan of action succeed, simply because they made the decision to commit. Once you make the decision to be committed, your brain is wired to stay focused on that decision and will figure it all out along the way.

“In order to do, you have to be. In order to be, you have to act”. – Terry Crews

MAKE THE DECISION so that you be in a state to succeed, then TAKE ACTION and go to work.

3 Don’t do it alone

Find a workout buddy. We recommend having 1-2 workouts together for some extra fun and motivation, however, select your workout partner wisely. While it can be excellent to have a workout partner for fun and accountability, there have been times where this can be a downfall.

There are so many differences physically, even to those you may think have similar goals, and you can run the risk of doing workouts that are not best suited to either participant and you don’t end up seeing the intended results. A workout partner can be a great boost for motivation, but when schedules don’t align, or if your partner gets demotivated, are you still going to the gym or will you watch Netflix at home with them?

If you don’t have a friend or family member at the gym with you, you can join in a Group Fitness class or Group Training for additional accountability and motivation.
