Pilates… what is it?

One man’s enduring philosophy on strength, movement and physical fitness

Although often lumped together with the disciplines of Yoga, Pilates has a very different history. Unlike the ‘ancient spokes of the yoga wheel’, Pilates was born in the 20th century western world. It is the name-sake of its originator, Joseph Pilates, a German expat with a diverse fitness background. Joseph Pilates was born in 1880. He was the original cross-trainer; having trained as a boxer, a circus performer and a self defense teacher. As well, he was highly influenced by dance and his work with the dance community.

According to Pilates, the importance of exercising with precision and grace, with an emphasis on deep breathing and mental concentration, are essential to a healthy body. He called this method of exercise Contrology. In his book Return to Life with Contrology (first published in 1945… and still widely read today) he states: “Exercise should not cause fatigue, but instead uplift and awaken the body and mind”.

According to a 2005 Survey conducted by The Pilates Method Alliance, there were 11 million Americans who regularly practiced Pilates and over 14,000 instructors teaching the discipline. Since that time, those numbers have swelled considerably.

All over the world, Pilates studios are adapting Joseph Pilates’ method of Contrology – consisting of exercises and a mat repertoire of 34 movement patterns. Pilates believed the practice of his method would lead to improved posture and stamina; which would lead to graceful movements. The global popularity of Pilates seems to be proving him right.

Once you step into one of our Pilates classes, our qualified instructors will help lead you through controlled movements, linked to your breathing, which then utilize your body as a coordinated whole… rather than focusing on its individual parts. The practice of Pilates is a challenging yet attainable goal for any of our members seeking increased energy and stamina, while strengthening their entire body in a safe and effective manner.

One Health Clubs offers many Pilates classes throughout the week.
