Props in Yoga, Interview with Lori Lewis

by | May 9, 2014 | Yoga

If you have ever attended one of Lori’s yoga classes, you may hear her say: “Think of your blocks as an aid… not a crutch”. Although many of our members practice yoga without blocks or other props, these valuable tools for enhancing the practice of yoga allow us all to express ourselves in yoga poses more deeply; while still offering a safe option. Recently, we went to the source and asked Lori to help explain the true benefits of yoga props.

Q: Why should we make use of the various aids when we practice yoga?

A: Props such as: blocks, straps, bolsters, towels, blankets or even the wall can assist us and support us in finding correct alignment and can help us to completely release and relax.

Q: If I am new to yoga, how will yoga props serve me best?

A: The use of props allows individuals with hesitance, tightness, stiffness or balance issues to practice yoga with confidence and security.

Q: Can you give us some examples?

A: A simple (yet challenging for some) prompt of interlacing your hands behind your back is achievable by those with tight shoulders, or rotator injuries, by using a strap.

Also, for many who experience tightness or weakness in their back, elevating your foundation on a block during open and closed twists will allow for a safer back extension.

Q: Thanks Lori. We will end this Q&A by asking you to provide an overall summary of the benefits of practicing yoga with props?

A: Sure thing. In yoga, each pose has numerous benefits to the physical body. With props, most postures can be performed safely, removing any fear, and allowing the participant to enjoy the true benefits of yoga. It will help you to relax the mind and begin the peaceful journey of turning inward.
